A Manta Ray Made of Gears

Watch a real manta ray swim and you see one long, unhurried wave moving through its wings. This build recreates that motion in metal. You assemble more than 200 components into a mechanical ray that glides in place on your desk, wings swinging with the same slow rhythm as the animal itself.

What Is Under the Shell

Lifelike motion: the linkage is shaped around how a manta actually moves, so the finished model sweeps its wings smoothly instead of flapping stiffly
Magnetic shell: the outer skin lifts off with a pull — no screws — exposing the gear train and inner armor while everything keeps running
Pingopin connections: the exclusive pin system joins parts without loose wires, keeping the build clean inside and out
Two control knobs: dial in the wing swing speed and the LED light intensity to suit the room
Treated metal: an anti-corrosion finish protects the alloy parts, so the model stays sharp-looking for years

Build It Once, Watch It for Ages

Assembly takes about one to two hours at a medium difficulty — enough challenge to be satisfying, not enough to stall you. After that it earns its spot: a moving centerpiece for an office shelf, a home accent with an engineering story, or a hands-on STEM project that shows how linkages turn rotation into a swimming stroke.

Technical Details

Materials: aluminum alloy, zinc alloy, iron, brass
Part count: 200+ precision components
Age: 16+ — well suited to STEM learning

Excellent kit. Enjoyable to build and a lovely piece of art. One small problem is that you can’t fully tighten some bolts as it would create too much friction for the movement… and so some bolts may work loose and fall out with use. However this isa minor concern

Beautiful kit and a really enjoyable build. The wings actually flex and the LED glow inside gives it this floating effect. Looks like a real piece of art on my desk.

My partner and I built this together over the weekend and we had a blast. The instructions are clear and the finished manta is stunning. Best metal model we've assembled in a while.

We love everything about it. I am going to put it in my playroom and use it as a night light. The undulating wings seemed to be a real manta ray in front of me. I absolutely fell in love with it.

Caught my eye at first sight. Received my mechanical manta ray in about 10 days. It was my first time to try metal modeling, and I encountered some minor problems during the assembly process, but I was very satisfied with the prompt and responsive customer service, and finally completed my metal manta ray model without any problems. The metal gears are very textured and beautifully crafted beyond my expectations. After all, its almost $600 USD asking price, haha ......

Both the items were well packed. Upon unpacking the items were stunning and looking very exquisite. They were made with the finest metal and colors were better than the pictures. The movements were also surprisingly smooth.

Whilst the model is quite beautiful, I was disappointed it only took a little over an hour to assemble. I purchased this kit as a hobbyist looking for my next challenge and it was anything but. Lovely model, but far too quick and simple to complete for my purposes.

The gears don't have matching points to make sure they are lined up to be able to run the motor. I know they say build the motor first, but I had more trouble doing that with the Natulis so I started from scratch first part first, but then I started going too fast and missed parts to screw down and wound up getting the motor seized up and then had to take it all apart and start again but now the motor runs great. The gears are not not as well marked on the instructions so I got one gear turned in the wrong position don't forget the washers!!! They are very valuable for the ease of movement of the gears and the rest of the parts. After that it went together very well great job ROK I will be looking for other great models in the future!!!","author":"Ray K.","date":"2025-09-08T22:00:00.000Z","verified":true,"images":[]},{"rating":3,"title":"","body":"For the money, I was disappointed that the ray did not have better lighting. I bought the ROKR manta ray for 45 dollars and its light display is amazing and the movement is wonderful - would have expected this to be equally in its visual impact.
