Bench Companion is the FNIRSI SWM-20 portable spot welder with dual-pulse control. A useful bench tool should make its settings easy to reach and its process easy to follow. Bench Companion puts the weld controls and a 2.4-inch display into one compact unit.

Stand, orientation and portable body details

See the setting. Make the adjustment.

The screen and rotary control give you a clear place to work through the available welding settings. Dual-pulse operation adds another way to tune the process for suitable material. Begin on a representative scrap sample so the actual joint, rather than a generic number, determines the setup.

Place the pens where the work needs them.

Separate handheld welding pens let you position the contact points around a small assembly. The compact body keeps the main unit beside the work area while you concentrate on placement. Consistent contact, a suitable material, and correct preparation matter as much as the setting on the display.

A bench tool you can put away.

Rechargeable power and USB-C charging make the unit easier to keep with a compact electronics toolkit. The form suits an experienced maker who wants a portable option for appropriate thin-strip spot-welding tasks, with enough room on the bench left for the rest of the project.

What material thickness will it weld?

Weld suitability depends on strip material, thickness, surface preparation, and the complete setup. Tune the settings on a representative sample before working on the final assembly.

Is it a beginner’s battery-building kit?

No. Spot welding and working around battery cells require appropriate experience, insulation, protection, and safe handling. It is a tool, not a complete battery-building system.

How should I start?

Read the manual, prepare a stable work area, inspect the pens and connections, and tune on a representative scrap sample before using it on the intended assembly.

The device is well-made, beautiful, and convenient, but it doesn't weld as advertised. It can be used to assemble some power banks with a 0.1-0.15mm tape and nothing thicker. I tried to weld a 0.2mm tape to an 18650 battery and it only gave a few pulses at one point - it holds very weakly and if you pull it, it falls off. The 0.1mm tape is welded okay, but there is no complete weld. It's not even worth trying with copper tape - it doesn't stick. The product's specifications clearly do not match reality.

Tested by welding 32700 batteries with a 0.15 x 8mm nickel-plated steel strip. It worked at about medium settings on the device. It won't be possible to detach it without damaging the tape or the battery. Out of curiosity, I increased all the settings by twenty percent and tried again - a noticeably stronger pulse, but the tape still doesn't burn even with these settings. Overall, compared to all the devices I've dealt with that cost up to a hundred dollars (including the previous model from the same manufacturer), this one is definitely the best. A successful model. I recommend the product and the seller. \n P.S. In my opinion, the wires are too thin (they get noticeably hot) and short, and it would be more logical to connect them from the bottom of the device (they block the screen and pull the relatively light device towards the work area).
