A Manta Ray Made of Gears

Watch a real manta ray swim and you see one long, unhurried wave moving through its wings. This build recreates that motion in metal. You assemble more than 200 components into a mechanical ray that glides in place on your desk, wings swinging with the same slow rhythm as the animal itself.

What Is Under the Shell

Lifelike motion: the linkage is shaped around how a manta actually moves, so the finished model sweeps its wings smoothly instead of flapping stiffly
Magnetic shell: the outer skin lifts off with a pull — no screws — exposing the gear train and inner armor while everything keeps running
Pingopin connections: the exclusive pin system joins parts without loose wires, keeping the build clean inside and out
Two control knobs: dial in the wing swing speed and the LED light intensity to suit the room

The gears don't have matching points to make sure they are lined up to be able to run the motor. I know they say build the motor first, but I had more trouble doing that with the Natulis so I started from scratch first part first, but then I started going too fast and missed parts to screw down and wound up getting the motor seized up and then had to take it all apart and start again but now the motor runs great. The gears are not not as well marked on the instructions so I got one gear turned in the wrong position don't forget the washers!!! They are very valuable for the ease of movement of the gears and the rest of the parts.
