Flip this board and roughly 3,000 steel beads rain down through a triangular field of pins. Each bead bounces left or right at random. By the time they settle in the bins below, they have drawn a bell curve — the same shape, run after run. That is the central limit theorem, sitting on your desk.

What Makes It a Teaching Tool

  • A live normal distribution. Every flip sends the beads through the pin grid again. The stack that forms in the bins is a fresh binomial distribution, built one bead at a time.
  • The theory is printed right on the face. The clear acrylic panel carries the standard deviation formula, Pascal's triangle, and the binomial theorem, so you can point from the falling beads to the math behind them.
  • Predicted vs. observed. The bins along the bottom are labeled with the expected percentages. Students can check how closely each run matches the theoretical curve — and see that no two runs are identical.
  • No setup between runs. The weighted stand holds the board upright and lets you flip it end over end. That one motion resets the beads for the next demonstration.
